Went for a birthday where we had the private dining area. Fantastic setting but unfortunately the food didn't match. Celeriac soup to start which was lovely but I had to wait at least 10mins for it to cool down. Still too hot to eat but everyone else had finished their starters. I then had a beef roast. Meat was mediocre, the Yorkshire pudding inedible, roast potatoes were wet, bland and tasteless, 2 pieces of carrots and some cabbage / kale. Lots of gravy was needed. Dessert was a creme brule but again very plain. Decaff coffee tasted like dishwater. Was charged for 2 pineapples juices even though I had one and the sparkling wine was 12 a flute! Have been before and it's been amazing so was very disappointed.
The hotel is located in a lovely setting with views of the rolling Devon countryside. Our comfy room in the stable block was spacious and well equipped. The bathroom was huge but I'm not sure a Belfast sink works, it's very wasteful of water and not really appropriate for bathroom use.The public rooms in the main building were full of character, comfortable chairs and sofas, and the log fires were welcoming as were the staff.Breakfast options were good as was the buffet selection. However, we found the dinner menu disappointing and struggled to find anything which took our fancy. Portion sizes were small and vegetables were charged extra. The wine list was good but prices were steep. For me the best part of the meal was the cheese board with a good selection of cheeses, and compared to the rest of the meal was a generous size, enough for 2 to share.
excellent food at top end prices. Lovely setting. Plenty if friendly, well motivated staff. Great venue for a short break.
Our most enjoyable visit yet - the food (especially the halibut) was well cooked and delicious, and the service was excellent. Prices seem much more reasonable and the house wines are wonderful.
Went to the pig as it was recommended by a friend, went for an anniversary meal! I would recommend getting there an hour before your table booking and sitting in one of the lounges with some piggy bits! Staff were very accommodating and all round great experience.
